Quantification and verification of the QUEST method as a tool for rapid assessment of exfiltration from gravity sewers

چکیده
Exfiltration from sewers poses negative environmental effects and health risks. Quantification of exfiltration is the first step towards solving these detrimental effects. QUEST/QUEST-C (Quantification of Exfiltration from Sewers with Artificial Tracers) methods were tested in this research. Two different tracers are used by these methods, in order to calculate mass balances rather than flow measurements. The tracers are injected in two different locations, and measured in one common downstream point. QUEST is based on pulse injection whereas injection in QUEST-C is continuous. Both methods are thought to be insensitive to errors in flow measurements. Nevertheless, they were developed theoretically and implemented straight away in real sewers without prior examination under controlled conditions. This was the goal of the current work, namely, to assess both methods under controlled conditions in a pilot-scale sewer rig. Under steady flow both methods were found accurate (average error ≤2%). However, out of the two, only QUEST-C was found to be a feasible, reliable and practical method for quantifying exfiltration from sewers under unsteady flow conditions (average error ±20%). In order to minimise errors, QUEST-C tests should be run for several hours at a time. QUEST, in contrast, did not present good reliability and accuracy and thus is not recommended for implementation in actual sewers, characterised by unsteady flow.

Assessing Exfiltration from Sewers with Dynamic Analysis of Tracer Experiments
A direct approach to quantify exfiltration from sewers is the QUEST-C tracer method. In this study, the authors present a novel approach for the dynamic analysis of a tracer experiment, considering information on varying sewer flow. An assessment of uncertainty is developed that accounts for systematic and random errors in the measurements and the sampling scheme. It is shown that the precision...
متن کاملDesign of experiments for quantifying sewer leakages by QUEST- C method
The structural state of sewer pipe is a crucial problem in urban areas because infiltrations and exfiltrations can occur and consequently contaminate the surface and deep water bodies, respectively. In this paper the application of a new method to quantify the sewer leakages (called exfiltrations) with tracers during dry weather is discussed. This method, called QUEST-C (Quantification of Exfil...

Introduction Dosimetric accuracy is a major issue in the quality assurance (QA) program for treatment planning systems (TPS). An important contribution to this process has been a proper dosimetry method to guarantee the accuracy of delivered dose to the tumor. In brachytherapy (BT) of gynecological (Gyn) cancer it is usual to insert a combination of tandem and ovoid applicators with a complicat...

The Box-Wilson central composite design (CCD) based on response surface methodology (RSM) was used for ethanol fermentation using very high gravity (VHG) finger millet hydrolysate. Optimized process variables were namely, concentrations of yeast extract, magnesium sulphate and pH of the medium. High gravity mashes (>300 g dissolved solids per liter) were prepared by a thermo-stable α-amylase, f...
